The Customs of Indigenous People of Peninsula Malaysia

In this project, the intention is to explore the 18 tribes of Orang Asli in Malaysia which are very unique and different in terms of: background, culture, customs, and their beliefs. Below are some of the thought-provoking taboos and customs that are still practiced by the Orang Asli mainly focusing on the Temiar Tribe.

The Customs of Indigenous People Book Cover

The book cover is designed in this way as it is intended to show that the orang asli are very pleased to share their stories and customs with the people outside.

How Soul Escapes the Body

Temiar Taboo 1: How Soul Escapes the Body

Because the Temiar believe that people have several souls which include the “heart(-soul)” and the “head(-soul)”, therefore no Temiars can be “startled” as their head soul tends to escape from their body causing soul loss.

Temiar Taboo 2: Living Happily as One

Temiars reject to consume animals that they have raised themselves; For instance: chickens, goats, ducks, and sheep since they believe that it may help make the villagers cleaner and more enjoyable to live.
